First edition of "one of the most costly and important [works] ever published on the American Indians"(Field), "a landmark in American culture" (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life, including some of the greatest American hand-coloured lithographs of the 19th century. This copy with a complete set of the very rare original wrappers, here uniformly bound as a fourth volume. After six years as superintendent of Indian Trade, Thomas McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the Western tribes in this original binding. First volume, Biddle; second volume, Rice & Clark ; third volume Rice & James Clark. 120 handcolored lithographic plates. The third volume contains a leaf of lithograph maps and 17pp. of facsimile signatures of the original subscribers. Large folio, contemporary 3/4 leather. All three volumes are disbound from text .
